Hey All,
Until a few months ago the word "blog" was foreign to me. This is my first web log and I hope that is serves as something more than an online diary. I assume that nobody is really interested in what kind of bagel I ate for breakfast, so I'll try to spare you all such tedium. Instead I intend to post things that pique my interest. No doubt, this will include some casual rambling, off the cuff remarks and academia. I hope that this blog gravitates more so to the latter and attracts insights from others interested in art, culture and emerging technology (as well as its practices).
On the note of culture and technology practices: Am alone in wondering if I ought to post "rules of conduct" or a disclaimer in this blog? In general, I am the type of person who likes to believe that people will take the high road and be compelled do the right thing. However, I am not very surprised when they do not. I say this not for myself so much, but to protect those who may post replies to other's postings within my blog.
Since I grew up culture has changed - both for the better and worse. Deeply embarrassing to me is the amount of hate crime that still exists in and outside of Canada. The incidents of vandalism of Jewish grave stones in Toronto exemplifies this. To my eye, hate crimes seem to be everywhere on the web and sadly on the rise again (evidenced by the 56 million dollars the Canadian government has dedicated to combat it in this in this year's budget). In a word, hate crime really bums be out. Further, I'm an ardent feminist who takes great issue with pejorative characterizations of women, knowing that those damnations (the b-word, the c-word etc.) carry more weight than their male counterparts. I was revolted to read new sexually shared colloquialisms a review of the new movie The 40 Year Old Virgin and was dismayed to learn in a similar article that S.L.U.T. is now an acronym that stands for "sexually liberated urban teens". How awful! What I want to know is where have all the feminists gone?
This is on my mind because as I rollerbladed from school to home the other day, I passed through a Portuguese neighborhood and was verbally assaulted by a 20 something male. He referred to me as a "bitch" for the amusement of his friends. This is the underside of peer pressure, I assume. I expect that this fellow would have minded his P's and Q's (old English spoken by barkeepers who would remind people to mind their pints and quarts) had he been alone. What was my reaction, you may ask? It was a giant eye roll and I kept skating. I suppose I should consider myself lucky that I wasn't "bitch-slapped".
I was pleased to see the flag function on this site, and urge others to get to know it, if they are unaware of it. It indicates to me that there is a community out there that has the same concerns. In closing, don't get me wrong - I'm no prude and enjoy lively conversation and contentious issues. I simply wanted to remind people about that invisible line in the sand and urge them not to overstep it, mostly for the benefit of others..
OK. Lecture over. It would be very helpful if blog enthusiasts posted some suggestions on how to manipulate this blog and make format without writing raw code.
Thanks,
Peter

Hello Peter,
Thanks for the Kudo about my site. I wonder sometimes if anyone actually views it outside of immediate family members and friends; that being of course after I have sufficiently nagged them to do so, just so that I may justify the $8.00 US I spend every month so that I can have my own webspace and host my own site.
I would greatly enjoy being of any assistance that I may, in your attempts to become a presence in this medium of electronic expression. I viewed your post that you have on your site. Very nicely written. I think you fortunately have the first and foremost gift necessary for creating a great blog. Writing is not something many people have a talent for. That being said, I must admit, I am at a bit of a loss, my assumption is that due to your name your gender is male, however in your post you refer to having been called a "bitch".
Maybe it's a Canadian/European thing us "Yanks" haven't quite figured out yet (along with the whole "Bonnet" and "Boot" thing when referring to the parts of a car). Typically, the "B" word you referenced is reserved for members of society of the feminine nature (keeping in mind that refers to "the new order of cross-gendering" that has become prevalent in today's society. {Hoping you understand my attempts to be as 'politically correct’ as possible.} Keep in mind I am not condoning its usage, however pointing out the perceived lack of intelligence obviously characteristic of the characters who chose to use that terminology with you.
Ok... before I go shoving my proverbial foot into my proverbial mouth any further... let me get on with your email.
The outline and design of my site, was/is based primarily off of a template I had purchased about a year or two ago. It is created with Flash, and with a few adjustments, seemed to be pretty cool. When I decided to add Blogger to my repertoire however, I found it a little more difficult. I finally ended up taking the template, provided by blogger, and saving the source locally (I can tell you how to do this if you'd like). I then used Dreamweaver MX, to edit it to look the way I wanted it to look. Then, having gotten my Flash in there, and my other misc. customizations, I then replaced the code used for the template, and viola.
Now, I noticed also that you indicated in your post that you wanted to include pictures into your posts. I originally went with some other "sources" but have finally settled on Flickr.com for this. It is pretty simple to use and very reliable. It easy to upload a photo, then Flickr saves it into the various sizes for optimal use, and then you can blog your photos directly from Flickr (once you’ve set up your settings).
I don’t know what else you’re interested in, but feel free to contact me with any other questions/comments. If you’d like, you can also view my other blog at www.spaces.msn.com/members/snaprider. I had to create this one because many government agencies and large corp.’s don’t allow flash sites and or use filtering to only allow certain sites to be viewed by their employees. I have a few family members to whom this applies, but they are able to access the MSN one.
Good luck… I’ll try to watch your progress, and look forward to your posts.
Oh... and in case you were wanting my site name again, it's www.snaprider.com.
